My Trip to Walgreens

Well, I officially made my first "big trip" to Walgreens this morning. I have never planned out a Wags trip- I usually just pop in for a few small items I can get super cheap here and there, or when I go to pick up a prescription. (And if I happened to get a register reward or have a coupon, it wasn't that big of a deal to me!) Today was the last day of their most recent circular, and I discovered that I had a lot of coupons that worked well with the sale- most of which expire sometime this weekend.

The first thing I did was print out the Walgreens shopping list from grocerysmarts (I printed the entire list, so I could make notes and see any other promos that are going on which may not be advertised in the circular), next, I checked out iheartwags for some ideas and freebie scenarios-and then I got down to business :)

Being that this was my first "big" trip, I decided that I wanted to focus on all the products I had coupons for which offered Register Rewards- that way I could use those earned RR's next time. I thought about making 2 separate transactions at this one trip (get some RR's first, then roll them over to the next) but since I am still learning about this little game, I wanted to see just how much I saved overall.

I'm not going to lie- it took me a good solid half hour to write my list and sort my coupons, but once I had them all together, the shopping was a piece of cake (well- shopping is always a piece of cake for me!)

So here is the breakdown of my trip- I think I did a pretty good job, considering the fact that I didn't go in with any RR's or past experience... *Totals out of pocket (OOP) factor in any register reward (RR) earned or mail in rebate (MIR).

  • 6 boxes of Kleenex- 2.29ea; on sale B1G1; used (2) .50/3; earned 3.00 RR- total OOP after RR= 2.87 (about 48 cents a box!)

  • 2 Glade plug-ins oil refills- 5.99ea; on sale B1G1; used free warmer w/ refill coupon; 5.88 OOP- but- qualifies for SC Johnson MIR (5.00) so grand total is 99 cents for all 3!

  • 3 Glade room sprays- 2.49ea; used (3) 1.00/1 MQ and .50/1 WQ; total OOP 2.97- also qualifies for SC Johnson MIR (5.00) so that makes this a 2.03 money maker!

  • 2 Purex 3-1 detergent sheets- 2 for 9.00; used B1G1 coupon; earned 1.00 RR; total OOP 3.50 for both/ 1.75 each!

  • 1 Colgate toothpaste- 2.99; used 1.00 off WQ, .75/1 MQ; earned 2.00 RR= FREE and a .76 money maker!

  • 1 Lady Speed Stick- 1.99; used 1.00/1 MQ; earned 1.00 RR= FREE (one penny money maker! Woo-hoo!)

  • 2 Aveeno baby shampoo- 4.79ea; used 3.00/1 MQ; earned 3.00 RR; total OOP 3.58 or 1.79 each (this is a steal for Aveeno!)

  • 4 Nivea lip gloss/ chapstick- 3.29 and 3.99 (I got 2 of each); used 2 B1G1 MQ; and WQ which made them .99- so it looks like this: (3.29 + 3.29+ 3.99+ 3.99) - 6.58 (they take the lower price off for the B1G1) and then -10.60 (the Walgreens coupon adjusts the current price of all 4 down to 99 cents each- takes off 3.00, 3.00, 2.30, 2.30) SO with all the coupons, they took 17.28 off of 14.56= $2.68 Money Maker! (I hope that made sense, I will break it down at the bottom)

  • 3 boxes Kotex Tampons- 2.99ea; used 1.00/1 MQ and 1.50/2 MQ; earned a 5.00 RR= 1.47 OOP (49 cents a box)

  • 4 packs Dentyne gum- 1.39ea; used (2) 1.00/2 MQ and WQ to make them .69/ea (takes .70 off per pack); total OOP .76 (19 cents a pack)

  • 2 Sudafed PE- 4.99; used (2) 1.50/1 MQ; earned 5.00 RR; total OOP 1.98 (99 cents each)

  • 4 cans Campbells soup- 1.50ea; used 1.00/4 MQ and WQ to make them .79/ea (takes off .71 per can); total OOP 2.16 (.54 per can)

  • 4 Vicks DayQuil- 5.00ea; used (4) 1.50/1 MQ; earned a 10.00 RR; total OOP 4.00 (1.00 a box!- with allergy season coming- I really need this!)

My grand total was $64.51 BUT...
I got back 30.00 in Register Rewards and get 10.00 back in MIR's!

Once all is said and done, my official total was: $24.51! And I saved $113.95 with coupons :) Not too shabby for my first time, if I may say so myself ;)

So next time I walk into Walgreens, I will have $30 in Register Rewards to roll, not to mention $10 in rebates heading my way! Let the games begin!

*Here is a quick explanation for the Nivea lip care (using a different scenario with gum- thank you krazycouponlady) and why it is important to hand the cashier your manufacturer coupons before your Walgreens coupons:

{BUY 2} Dentyne Gum Regular Price $1.00 each

-Manufacturer coupon for Buy 1, Get 1 FREE (or -$1.00)

-Walgreen’s In Ad Coupon for 2/$1 (or-$1.00- adjusts price to .50/ea)

Final Price: FREE

Here’s what it would look like if you gave them the in-ad coupon first:

{BUY 2} Dentyne Gum Regular Price $1.00 each-Walgreen’s In Ad Coupon for 2/$1 (or-$1.00)
-Manufacturer coupon for Buy 1, Get 1 FREE (or -$.50)

Final Price: $.50

Old Navy Weekly Resets Today!

It's Thursday, and you know what that means! Old Navy Weekly is gearing up to bring you lots of new coupons! You can sign up to receive text messages- usually containing the item of the week or even a clue to where a coupon is hidden. If you are new to coupon hunting with Old Navy- check it out now- just move the mouse around (the arrow will turn into the finger when something is "clickable" or move able) and find the hidden coupons! Some are tricky- maybe moving a shirt to another outfit, or switching pants around. Values range from 10-15% off, and $5 off $25 to $50 off $100! I love using these coupons on clearance items for the kids :) The website generally re-sets around 3:00pm (that's been the average this past month) and the high value coupons go really fast! So get those clicking fingers ready ladies!

Here are the locations of last weeks coupons- (the entire page may change, sometimes it stays the same, and only the item of the week will be different! You never know!) If you have never hunted- maybe go now and see how it's done, just for practice :)

10 % off entire purchase: click on blue tank and any jeans
15% do above then click on Amy
$5.00 off a $25.00 purchase click on pink top and any jeans then click on Eva
$10.00 off a $50.00 purchase click on yellow shirt and any jeans
$15 off $75 – Click Amy’s Face (In the first circle) then little Kelly’s Face (the last circle)

Happy hunting- and let me know if you get lucky :)

Great Internet Deals!

Just wanted to share some of my favorite frugal finds from the world wide web!

Brandi E. told me about a great discount site called Groupon. You create an account and choose your demographics, and daily deals are sent directly to your email inbox! Some deals include restaurants, spas, gyms, and even whale watching tours- all at huge discounts. But, you only get the deal if enough people sign up, so it makes it kind of exciting :) Go here to sign up and start saving today!

OC Restaurant Week ends on Saturday!
If you have never taken advantage of this event, you are definitely missing out! Restaurants all over Orange County participate in this week-long event, and offer spectacular menus at deeply discounted prices! Most menus are prix-fixe, meaning you choose an item from each category (appetizer, entree, dessert), at a set price. Some offer both lunch and dinner, but most run the dinner special only. Salt Creek Grille has a lunch special for $10! Appetizer, entree, and a dessert for $10- you can't beat that! Reservations are highly recommended, go here for more details or to see the entire list of participating restaurants and their menus. Bon appetit!

On that note....
OC Spa Week is coming!
April 12-18th, booking begins March 15th! Go here and sign up, and you will be able to browse through the participating spas in your area, and the full sized treatments they are offering (I spied Burke Williams woo-hoo!) and everything is $50! Ahhhhhhhhhmazing!

One of my Favorite Things

If you are like me, you jump at any chance to save money! Whether it's spending late nights printing coupons from the internet, or filling out countless forms for free samples- every little bit counts! But when I sign up for a loyalty program and handed one of those tiny key-ring cards... I absolutely cringe! Those darn things have taken over not only my keychain, but my purse and wallet as well! Yes, I know you can have your phone number or e-mail address linked to the card (I feel weird every time I announce this to the world) so why have those cards in the first place? I remembered hearing about a simple way to keep the cards all in one, compact place. After some internet searching, I found this: The Keyfobber.

You can hook onto your keyring, or just keep it in your car and grab it when you need it. The Keyfobber holds up to 10 loyalty cards, so you will never have to announce your blood type to everyone in line at Vons again :)

I have this in pink (it's cute!) I must say it is a little bigger than I would have liked, but it works like a charm and I have even done a few check out line demonstrations for curious onlookers! Head over to the website here- and check out the video while you are there!

Grocery Shopping at a Drug Store?

I have recently discovered that drug stores are often the best place to score great deals on not only toiletries and medication, but everyday grocery items as well! Milk, eggs, bread, tuna, soup- most kitchen staples can be found in a drug store at great low prices. When there is a stacking scenario- well that just sweetens the deal!
I was telling my friend, Jill, about some canned tomato sauce I bought last week at Walgreens. There was an in-ad coupon which made the sauce 39 cents a can. I also had a manufacturer coupon for 1.00 off 3. SO I bought 3- which would be $1.17 with just the Walgreens coupon BUT then add in the manuf. coupon- takes a dollar off- I got 3 cans for 17 cents! You can't beat that! (Sidenote- I did not make a special trip to Walgreens for 3 cans of tomato sauce! I had a decent size list of things we needed or things we can use, and I had to fill a prescription as well!)
Here are two awesome websites that highlight CVS and Walgreens deals and match-ups for the week (their week is Sun-Sat)- this girl is amazing- check out how she does it- most of the stuff she gets is virtually free!

The Method to my Madness

A few of my friends have asked me my couponing process- I do want to say that there is no right or wrong way to do this- I guess you figure out what works best for you.

When I first started this whole obsession, I cut my coupons and filed them away in a small accordion coupon file (you can find them for a buck at Big Lots or drug stores) which works fine for beginners, and it kind of gets you started on organizing a coupon file. Now that I am a psycho coupon fanatic, I have upgraded to a 3 in. 3 ring binder. I bought a binder, baseball card pages (the plastic pages that hold cards in a binder), and clear plastic page protectors- if you end up wanting to do this- wait for a good coupon for Office Max or Staples before you go buy this stuff- it adds up! On the KCL website, you can print a table of contents and the pages/dividers for each section (here) so you can always have your coupons at a turn of a page! I also threw in a couple double pockets for my "store specific" coupons (Target, Walgreens etc.) and other coupons for restaurants and activities.

Here is my personal coupon ritual:
Sunday night- get my papers, and take out the inserts. Go through the inserts and take out the pages of the coupons I want. (I toss the pet ones and ads). If I am up to it, I will cut them then- usually while I catch up on my DVR'd shows of the week :) or even let the kids help me- they love it! OR I do this the next morning after the boys go to school. Monday morning, I also check my websites and print any new coupons. Then I file them accordingly! I try to file duplicates in order of expiration (the nearest expiration date in the front). This sounds like a lot, but you will get the hang of it quickly!

Since I get my email on my phone, I get updates from the sites I follow so I see when new coupons are available, and I print them/file them later that night after the kids are asleep or anytime at my leisure.

Before I go shopping (by the way- I don't make 10 trips to 10 different stores! I try to get it done in one outing) I make my lists. I reference the stores advertisements (the circulars you get in the mail- they come Mondays and Wednesdays for me- or you can see them online) to see what promos are going on or what is on sale. Then I match up my coupons! I make my list according to what I need to purchase (if the coupon is for $1.00/2- I make a note that I need to grab 2 of that item) and write a circled 'C' next to the things I have coupons for. I also make a small pile of the coupons I will use at that trip. I will also write down any deal or match-up I have seen online. I DO NOT go shop every week! I try to make a good grocery trip once (maybe twice) a month, and a Target, Walgreens or CVS trip when it's absolutely needed or will save me a lot. If a sale pops up mid-week (this happens!) I may make a trip if it's really worth it. Last week, Target had a random sale on Hefty zipper bags. They were originally 2.99, marked down to 1.00- I had some .55 off coupons so I went (during my sons baseball practice- not really making a trip, I was out already) and picked up 6 boxes for less than what 1 would have originally cost! To me, that is worth it!

I know the absolute best way to save the most money is to not focus on one store. I am totally guilty of doing this- I just can't bring myself to driving around with a car of 3 restless kids while I go and get 10 boxes of kleenex here, and 5 cans of soup there, just to save some money. If you have the time (more importantly, the patience) then by all means- do it! To maximize any savings- always remember it's best to use coupons on items that are on sale/special promotion or clearance!

My last point is this- don't give up! I really got overwhelmed the first few times I went shopping with my file of coupons. I didn't read the fine print (do that!) and the checker handed back a few coupons that wouldn't work. But once I saw how much I saved, it was all worth it. Also, try not to get too coupon happy. I know when I first started I tried to use as many coupons as I could, just because I had them or they were going to expire. Now, I have learned to save the coupons and wait for the best sale or scenario to come about. If they happen to expire before I ever use them- oh well- it wasn't meant to be!

My Favorite Tricks and Tools

There are a couple websites and blogs that I follow religiously. They update many times a day, so they are constantly showing you new and innovative ways to save!

My personal favorite has to be The Krazy Coupon Lady (thekrazycouponlady.com) It is the site I reference the most, and the site I will probably quote the most in my blog! KCL specializes in coupons and scenarios that get you items close to free- or even make you money! There are also valuable coupons she posts, complete with direct print links- which saves you a ton of time searching!

Another notable blog I follow is Freebies4Mom (freebies4mom.blogspot.com) This blog is all about freebies! And who doesn't like free?!?! She has the latest insider scoop on free samples, great high value coupons, sweepstakes, and giveaways. Again, some things vary region to region (some offers are not valid or available in CA). At first I was super apprehensive about signing up for so many samples. I don't need tons of tiny little samples in my house! True- BUT- most of the time the samples come with high value coupons- so you can get the actual size at a great discount, or free! Did you know Walmart always has free samples they can send you at no cost? Here's a shocker- Costco does too!

(Some larger manufactures have member areas that you can sign up for and get great coupons and samples- like P&G- I will post more about those later!)

The last way I like to save is by signing up for word of mouth programs. The two I like the most are SheSpeaks and Vocalpoint. You sign up, create a profile, answer a few questions, then sign up for products you are willing to try and talk about! So far, I have gotten full size toothpaste, body wash, laundry detergent, coupons for free pizzas, cookies, and more! ALL free- all full sizes! They also include some coupons for you to hand out and spread the word. You simply try the product, go back to the website, answer a short survey- and that's it! The surveys are super short and take less than 5 minutes total.

My honest advice would be to create a new email account- dedicated to coupons and offers. Sometimes you have to provide an e-mail address to receive a coupon- and of course, the junk that comes with it tends to fill up your inbox pretty quickly! Use this email for subscribing to blogs and saving sites (like Krazy Coupon Lady and Freebies4Mom) so you will always have the up to date information! You can also find many saving forums and sites on facebook! (KCL and F4M are on facebook- that way I can get their updates on my phone! So easy!)

If you are into online shopping- check out slickdeals.net or dealigg.com. I will be sure to post my favorites from them as well!

Coupon Clipping Makes CENTS!

If you asked me a year ago what I did to save money, I wouldn't have had an answer for you. Of course, we all like to save where we can, but sometimes convenience trumps necessity. With the recent recession and mortgage crisis, my husband and I were literally thrown into a whirlwind of financial dilemmas. Things that were normal to us, had to be omitted in order to make ends meet.

As a stay at home mom of a single income family of 5, I feel like it is my job to save money where I can, and be creative in the ways I go about doing so.

I began researching websites that specialize in saving tactics and coupon deals. I rarely (if ever) used a coupon, so a lot of the information was so new to me. I always thought coupon clipping was for old ladies with nothing but time on their hands! When I started clipping and collecting coupons, my husband would laugh at me, but when I would come home from the store and show him how much I saved- you can bet that was the last laugh!

Over the last six months, I have had so much success. It is so rewarding to me when I save any amount; obviously- the more the better! And, of course, I love to brag about what I am saving (or getting for free), not only because I am proud but because I want to help others save as well.

My hopes with creating this blog is to open your eyes to the wonderful world of couponing. At first, it is a bit overwhelming, but please be patient, you will be a pro coupon clipping frugalista in no time! I will touch on the basics, share my favorite money saving websites and blogs, and even throw in a couple budget friendly recipes here and there. Remember- I am fairly new to this too- so feel free to enlighten me anytime!

So this is where it all begins. Welcome to SoCal Frugal Deals and Steals!
